Donations to the fund are gratefully accepted.

To qualify for the scholarship the applicant must:

• Be actively farming on land the applicant owns or leases in NC or SC.

• Have been farming for five years or less.

• Applicants should not be a previous SAC scholarship recipient.

Applications are due by August 21, 2014

All applicants will be notified of their award status by September 3rd, 2014.  Applicants who meet the minimum criteria for a scholarship, but are not awarded one, will be given the opportunity to enroll in the conference at the discounted Early Bird Rate through September 10, 2014 (the public Early Bird Rate closes August 21st).

The Sustainable Agriculture Conference is an unparalleled opportunity for beginning farmers to learn how to be successful in their sustainable farming enterprises.  Special programming for beginning farmers includes: finding land, farm business finances, access to community-based capital, using body mechanics and tools to stay healthy longer, and season extension techniques. Other conference workshops cover cutting edge issues in sustainable agriculture, including organic weed control, soil fertility, pasture-based livestock, food safety and processing, and direct marketing. All of it is essential information for new farms to thrive.

Scholarship recipients are eligible to attend all regular conference activities, beginning with the dinner and keynote on Monday, Nov. 10, and including all workshops, plenary sessions, meals and networking sessions on Tuesday, Nov. 11 and Wednesday, Nov. 12. Scholarship recipients are expected to cover their own lodging and travel expenses: Visit for resources on reducing these costs. The scholarships do NOT cover Monday pre-conference tours and intensives.

In addition, scholarship recipients will receive a complimentary membership to the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association.

Please note that farm apprentices and students are not eligible for these scholarships unless they own or lease the land they are farming. Special Student/Apprentice rates are available for conference registrants.

Scholarships are funded by contributions to the William W. Dow Scholarship Fund.  Contributions to send a beginning farmer to CFSA’s conference are gratefully accepted and can be submitted through our secure website.
