New! Defend Carolina Organic Family Farms
Celebrate America’s independence by exercising your right to speak out for local, organic farmers and food!
Sustainable agriculture benefits our families, our farmers and our land. It gives farmers a chance to earn a fair living for taking care of our environment, and it gives consumers the safest, healthiest foods possible. And today, sustainable agriculture faces a grave threat from Washington, DC.
The U.S. House of Representatives is debating H.R. 2749, the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009. H.R. 2749 is sweeping legislation that is meant to clean up the corporate food processors that have been the source of recent widespread food contamination outbreaks. But the bill is “one-size-fits-all,” and treats small family farms and businesses just like multinational corporations. Without changes, H.R. 2749 will devastate local food entrepreneurs and farms, and force many out of business.
You can help protect those local farms and businesses by taking action today. Grassroots pressure has already worked! We have eliminated some of the worst provisions in the legislation. Now we must keep the momentum going.
Call or fax your U.S. House Representative right away, either at their local offices or in Washington, DC, and ask them to defend local farms and businesses by making these critical changes to H.R. 2749.
If you only rarely contact your Congress member, this may be the most important call you make in 2009. Local, organic food is crucial for health care, the economy, and the environment. Please support our family farms and businesses and the communities—like yours—that rely on them by taking action today.

REAP Grants
Would you like to get some financial help to install clean energy equipment on your farm? Applicability for this 25% cost-share grant program for on-farm renewables and energy efficiency has been expanded. Agricultural operations in or near cities are now also applicable. Any agricultural operation that consumes lots of energy might want to give this a look.
This is the same grant program used by CFSA members Goat Lady Dairy and Chapel Hill Creamery to install solar-thermal water heating. Learn more about this helpful grant program on this "frequently asked questions" at Environmental Law & Policy Center's website. The deadline is July 31, 2009.
