Anderson, South Carolina, located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is a wonderful destination for this year’s conference. In the northwestern corner of South Carolina, Anderson is just two hours from Asheville, Columbia or Charlotte. Next to scenic Lake Hartwell with its 900 mile shoreline, Anderson boasts great state parks and three dozen waterfalls. Anderson is studded with landmarks, including charming Pendleton, an entire town on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Woodburn & Ashtabula historic homes. It’s also home to the Jockey Lot, the largest flea market in the Southeast. Over a thousand dealers fill its 65 acres every Saturday & Sunday. Its overall quality of life earned Anderson recognition as an “ All-America City ” in 2000 by the National Civic League.

Camping and Bed & Breakfasts
For camping and B&Bs, see www.visitanderson.com

Host Program
Staying at a local farm or with a local resident can help you reduce travel expenses and make the conference more
affordable and memorable. It is also a great way to renew old friendships or make new ones. Plus it can be a valuable opportunity to share experiences and trade knowledge. If you live in the Anderson/Greenville/Clemson area and would like to offer your home/farm as a host site, or if you are in need of such a place to stay, please email cheryl@carolinafarmstewards.org or call (919) 542-2402. You can also use the listservs to make these arrangements. (In the past, some folks have offered a bed; others have offered a spot for tent camping.)

Ride Share Bulletin Board
Carpooling is an environmentally-responsible, economical and fun way to get to the conference. With gas prices as they are, this year we need to make our strongest effort ever to carpool! If you would like to give someone a ride or are looking for transportation to the conference, contact the CFSA office to sign up on our ride-share bulletin board. Email cheryl@carolinafarmstewards.org or call (919) 542-2402. We will attempt to find a carpool match for you. Your local listserv is also an excellent forum to request or offer carpooling to the conference!

Work Exchange & Scholarships

Making the conference affordable for you!
For the third straight year, CFSA has not raised the price of the regular registration fee for its members. The full conference remains at $250 including workshops, farm tours, meals, receptions and more. Nonetheless, we recognize that conference expenses can be a lot for our members, especially with the high price of gas. Below are several ways to keep your conference costs down. If you have any questions or want to discuss these options, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.

WORK EXCHANGE
Limited partial discounts are available in exchange for working at the conference. There are a wide variety of tasks that we need help with from taking meal tickets to helping set up AV equipment. The exchange rate is $10 per hour for every hour you work up to a maximum of 7 hours, or $70. To sign up for work exchange, send in your registration with half of your conference registration fee and indicate that you would like a work exchange application. Return the application as soon as possible. Please be prepared to work conscientiously.

SCHOLARSHIPS for NC and SC FARMERS
A limited number of partial scholarships are available to attend the conference. To qualify you must be a resident of North or South Carolina and be a full-time, part-time or student farmer. You must send in a registration form with your scholarship application to be considered for a scholarship. Contact Cheryl Rettie for applications or further information at cheryl@carolinafarmstewards.org or (919) 542-2402. Scholarship applications are due by September 30. You may apply for either scholarship or work exchange but NOT BOTH. Work Exchange applications will be accepted until all of the positions are filled.

Scholarships for North and South Carolina Extension Agents
There are a limited number of scholarships available for NC Cooperative Extension Agents interested in attending the conference. In North Carolina, this is an in-service training opportunity. For more information, NC Extension Agents may contact Carol Moore, SARE Model State Program Assistant at (919) 731-2077 or moore6827@bellsouth.net. SC Extension Agents are eligible to receive a state SARE travel scholarship to attend the conference. For more information, contact Geoff Zehnder at 864-656-6644 or zehnder@clemson.edu. Contact Carol and Geoff also for PRECONFERENCE funding.

Contributions to the Scholarship Fund
By making a donation to the Scholarship Fund, you will be making it possible for low income and/or young farmers to attend the conference at a more affordable cost. Please consider making this donation. Any and all amounts make a difference!
