On-Farm Intensives are part of the 39th Sustainable Agriculture Conference but may be purchased separately from conference admission.
Location: Catawba Trail Farm, Durham, NC
Presenters: Delphine Sellars, Lucille Patterson, Justin Wooley & Alyssa Florwick, Urban Community AgriNomics
The Urban Community AgriNomics (UCAN) team shares how their small minority-founded nonprofit recast a dilapidated farmstead and former plantation into Catawba Trail Farm, an agricultural education center, community garden, and agritourism destination. They discuss the successes and pitfalls of UCAN’s process of going from land access to land ownership, how they brought the vision to life, and future plans for the land. During an engaging farm tour, witness the ongoing transformation of Catawba Trail Farm, a historic property with two restored buildings, a walking trail, a working garden, a demonstration kitchen, and a farmers market. Learn what it takes to take on such a project, including partnering with land trusts, writing grants, and managing staff, and leave with the understanding of a replicable model that promotes economic development, youth engagement, land conservation, community building, and resilience.
Registration: $55 | $40 for CFSA Members | $35 for Students & Veterans
