How You Can Help Carolina Farms and Food

There are so many ways you can get involved in supporting local food and organic farms in North and South Carolina.

Whether it’s voting with your fork, pledging your time or dollars, or diving in deeper with what CFSA does, here are several ways to dig in.

  • Become a member and add your voice to advocate for fair farm and food policies.
  • Donate to support the work of CFSA so we can expand the adoption of responsible agricultural practices and build a secure, inclusive and accessible food system.
  • Join a food council and play a role in giving voice to local communities.
Operating as a remote team means that we don't always have the opportunity to occupy the same space as our coworkers. This last week the Local Foods Team found their "Watercooler."

Jay, Lenwood, Sara, Karen, Cassidy and Emily (who is the brand new #FarmsSHARE Faith Community Organizer) had a great day planning and strategizing while also visiting the amazing @feedandseedsc and @swamprabbitcafe

How quickly field heat is removed from crops can impact your bottom line.

Simple, low-budget forced-air cooling systems (or pre-coolers) can remove heat fast, lower respiration rates, and keep crops crisp. You are left with less shrinkage and longer-lasting, higher-quality vegetables.

While forced-air technology has been a staple for larger operations dealing in fruits and vegetables for decades, it isn’t often presented as a practical tool for small-scale farms. But with a few simple pieces of equipment, almost any grower can add forced-air cooling to their post-harvest process.

CFSA has never been shy about advocating for sustainable farms!📣In fact, Sustainable Farmers are at the core of our Advocacy! We all win when small and mid-sized farms prosper because they nurture communities with healthy foods and a clean environment.

Roland, CFSA's Executive Director, is in DC today collaborating with Organic Farmers Association (OFA) and taking part in the “Farmers Fly-In Lobby Day”

Today, he spent time with Austin Bryniarski of Alma Adams staff. Rep. Adams is a cosponsor of the opportunities in organic act.

💡If you were in DC today what would you want to share with Rep. Adams staff?

There are so many factors to manage in the greenhouse. From light, heat, water, nutrition, and soil, the list is exhaustive and, at times, overwhelming.

"The early life of plants sets the stage for how they will produce once in the field. Stunting, stalling, slowing down, or allowing plants to become leggy and root-bound cannot be overcome and can lead to significant reductions in yields and increased pest and disease pressure. Every job you do afterward can be made easier by learning to manage plants in the greenhouse properly."

What are the common mistakes and key areas to focus on?

Check out our recent blog post, "Seed Starting for Success,"(🔗 in bio) where Joe (CFSA organic initiatives coordinator) covers potting soil, nutrition, tray selection, timing, irrigation, as well as heat and light.
