How you can grow the sustainable agriculture movement in the Carolinas and help ensure a healthier agricultural system from farm to fork

1. Learn more about sustainable agriculture and organic food

2. Find Local and Organic Food

3. Buy Local and Buy Organic

4. But Isn’t Organic Super-Expensive?

  • Cooking with fresh, seasonal produce and sustainably raised ingredients doesn’t have to be expensive.  Check out these tips, recipes and money-saving ideas from the fabulous, Linda Watson, the genius behind Cook for Good! Linda teaches you how to do it for $5 a day! You can afford to eat wonderful food that is good for you and for your planet.

5. Take Action on Fair Food and Farm Policies

Join the Movement to Make Local, Organic Food Available for All!

At the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association, we fight for fair farm and food policies. Our members—farmers, gardeners, businesses, and concerned citizens—want to create a sustainable, regional food system centered on local, organic agriculture. CFSA gives voice to that vision by representing our members before state and federal officials, championing changes to our laws that promote healthy food and farming, and defending small farms from unfair rules and unscrupulous business practices.

You can be a part of this strong, active, and enthusiastic community and help local, organic food and farming grow.

6. Go Visit a Farm!

A visit to a farm encourages our local farmers. It helps you (and your kids) understand where their food comes from. You’ll eat better and learn great ways to grow your own food.

Now, more than ever, thousands of local people are supporting the sustainable farming movement by learning more about sustainable agriculture. Join us! Go out and visit local farms on one of CFSA’s Farm Tours, take a class, attend an event, or come to our annual Sustainable Agriculture Conference.

7. Volunteer

CFSA is always looking for passionate and talented folks to help with our Farm Tours, help get the word out in your area about our Sustainable Agriculture Conference, write for our blog and newletter, help out at the Cobblestone Farmers’ Markets in Winston-Salem, and tackle administrative tasks in our Pittsboro office. If you’ve got another volunteer job in mind, let us know!

> To volunteer at CFSA, please email Laura Stewart, CFSA’s Education Director.

8. Join a Friends of CFSA regional volunteer leadership group

Friends of CFSA groups are comprised of individuals, locally grouped by geography, who embrace our guiding values and are committed to advancing our mission.

Friends of CFSA have two main roles:

  • Raising funds for CFSA
  • Raising CFSA’s visibility and stature

9. Join or Give to CFSA

Giving to CFSA is one of the best ways you can support local food and farming.

CFSA is a community of farmers, gardeners, businesses, organizations, and consumers working together to advocate for fair farm and food policies, educate about local, organic agriculture, and open up markets for farmers and local, sustainably-grown food.

Your support says:

  • You care about family farms and the vital contribution they make to our health and economy;
  • You want to improve our environment by helping farmers adopt organic practices;
  • You want to help a new generation of farmers get their start; and
  • You want to create solutions to the challenges facing farmers and our food supply.
